Transition To Net Zero

Net Zero is simply the reduction of the amount of carbon entering the atmosphere to as close to
zero as possible, with remaining emissions re-absorbed by nature.

Electricity Grid - Battery Storage

The vast majority of countries around the world have signed up to the Paris Agreement, to limit the global temperature increase in this century to 2 degrees Celsius while pursuing efforts to limit the increase even further to 1.5 degrees.

A Net Zero state is seen as supporting these targets, and at COP26 in Glasgow a pact was reached for all countries to redouble on their efforts to achieve this goal.

The UK has made ambitious targets on climate change and has been at the forefront of renewable energy development for over a decade.

However, to support the continuous deployment of clean energy generation over the coming decades as well as the increase in electrification of transport and industry, the grid needs help.

Over the next decade, it has been forecast that the UK electricity network will require the deployment of several GW of flexible electricity storage to allow more renewable generation to connect to the grid.

What is Battery Storage?

Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
The way electricity is generated has been evolving over the past 20 years, with an increasing amount of the power required coming from renewable energy. In order to meet the targets set for the UK’s transition to Net Zero, the proportion of renewable energy must continue to increase in the coming decades. This brings several challenges to the operators of the UK’s electricity network as not only is new generation intermittent at times due to fluctuations in the weather, but the generation is spread widely across the country.
This is very different to how electricity has been generated over the last century with large coal and gas fired power stations being used to provide the baseload to cope with demand. In addition to this, the world is seeing increased electrification of transport and heating, meaning that demand is set to increase hugely over time.
Battery storage assists the grid operators by working flexibly – storing electricity at times of peak renewable generation and discharging that energy during times when demand is greatest and are therefore critical to the UK and global ambitions outlined in the Paris Agreement
